Is Type 2 diabetes a gut health problem?

According to new research, researchers have discovered that there are links between a certain type of gut bacteria and its ability to block insulin release of cells. The study was carried out on people who have type 2 diabetes and were considered clinically obese. 
According to the UK Diabetes charity, obesity is strongly linked with type 2 diabetes. In fact, numbers show that if you are obese, then 80-85% of these people will develop type 2 diabetes. If you have a higher BMI of 22 or more, then you are 80 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. 
What is Type 2 Diabetes?
Type 2 diabetes is when the cells in your body are unable to absorb the glucose it needs for energy. This is usually caused by inflammation. The pancreas produces and releases the hormone called insulin, but if the cells are unable to absorb the glucose, then glucose stays in the blood and the blood sugar levels rise to a high enough level to cause symptoms.

- Going to the toilet a lot, especially at night.
- Being really thirsty.
- Feeling more tired than usual.
- Losing weight without trying to.
- Genital itching or thrush.
- Cuts and wounds take longer to heal.

Treatment for Type 2 Diabetes
If you are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, then it is likely you will be prescribed medications to help control your blood sugar levels, but medicine is never the long-term solution. You should always look at ways you can improve your health without medicine. Turning to natural methods is the best solution. Here are some changes you can make to start you on your road to recovery.
- Follow an anti-inflammatory diet and start including bone broth in your diet immediately. Broth helps to improve digestion and reduce inflammation of the gut.
- It does not matter how much you exercise to start off with, but some is better than none. Try doing at least 20-30 minutes per day – walking or jogging is something you can do straight away.
- Drink plenty of water and start including natural probiotic drinks into your diet to boost your gut flora.
- Look at your sleep patterns. Are you going to bed too late or do you get up too early? You will find that when you start to exercise you will sleep better. Try going to be at 9.30am to wake up at 5.30am, or if you want to get up later, adjust the time by an hour. You should always aim for about 8 hours sleep per night. - Stop drinking alcohol. If you are a casual drinker, then it’s always good to give your body a break for a while. 12 weeks is good to aim for because you will see a good reduction in the effects of alcohol. If you have a harder drinking problem, then you may need support to help you.
- Learning to quieten your mind and learning to be calm is a great way to reduce the over-production of adrenalin which can cause weight gain. Meditation is also good for gut health. There is a strong connection between the gut and the brain (the gut-brain axis), so learning to have a calm mind will help calm down your gut also.
It is critically important that as a nation we address the growing problem with type 2 diabetes. The NHS spend £1.2 million per hour on diabetes, that equates to £25000 every minute on the condition.
