What is bone broth?

Bone broth is a food product that has gained some momentum in the recent years, but actually the method to create bone broth has been around for a very long time. Our ancestors have been making broth for years and it is now through research that we are beginning to understanding why this food is known as a superfood.

In simple terms, bone broth is bones used from animals such as cows, lambs and chicken that are then boiled in water for a long period of time. Adding apple cider vinegar and the long cooking process of boiling the bones helps to extract important minerals from the bones that then transfer into the broth itself. The minerals found in bones are proven to have scientific health benefits to the human body.

A jelly broth is filled with collagen

A good beef bone broth that is collagen filled should be a jelly like consistency before heating. Heat changes the consistency of broth turning it to liquid.

When we make our bone broth we use only the marrow and the knuckle bones as we have found these give the best results in cooking broth. We also roast our bones and slow-boil them for over 40-hours with our own homemade apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar is an acid and the acid helps to extract important minerals found in bones that are important to our health.

Why is bone broth good for you?

Bone broth is good for you because it contains important minerals that your body can become depleted in, collagen being one of those. Collagen is a protein and is found in bones, muscles, skin, and tendons. Over time, we produce less collagen and the production of collagen can also become affected by high sugar diets, smoking, sunlight, autoimmune disease, genetic changes and the ageing process. Therefore, replacing collagen naturally can help to stimulate the growth of collagen in the body and have a direct impact on improving your health [1].

What is Leaky Gut?

These tight junctions are the gateway between your intestines and your bloodstream. They control what is allowed to pass into the bloodstream from your digestive system. Tight junctions have a very precise job — they have to maintain the delicate balance between allowing vital nutrients to enter your bloodstream, while remaining small enough to prevent xenobiotics (disease-causing compounds from your diet or lifestyle) from passing out of your digestive system into the rest of your body. Leaky gut syndrome is more common than you think.

It is argued by many, but there is no scientific evidence to back up, that leaky gut syndrome can cause a wide variety of ailments, including autism, anxiety, depression, eczema and cancer. Most of these claims have yet to be proven by scientific studies. However, it is believed that leaky gut syndrome does exist and the symptoms for having a leaky gut are very real. How does bone broth help leaky gut syndrome?

Having a leaky gut can cause an array of health problems and it’s not just limited to the gut. The gut is now being linked to many other conditions that have emerged over the years, auto-immune diseases, diabetes and mental health are just some of them. [7] There is a common belief that bone broth helps to reduce inflammation of the gut. The collagen and the amino acids proline and glycine found in the broth can help heal the damaged cell walls.[8]

Eating bone broth every day should be as important as brushing your teeth. However, it’s important to remember to buy bone broth from a supplier who has tested for collagen content within the broth.
